Mastering Social Media: Best Practices to Optimize Your Reach

By Brandy Archie, OTD, OTR/L, CLIPP | AskSAMIE · 5 min read

Listen, today having a strategic social media presence is not optional — it’s essential! Whether you're a solo OTpreneur or scaling your private practice, social media is your megaphone 🎤 to share your mission, connect with your ideal clients, and establish authority in your niche.

But before you dive in and start posting everywhere, let’s walk through how to choose the right channels, why engagement is king 👑, and practical platform-by-platform tips to make your content shine and keep you from spending all of your time posting!

Why a Social Media Presence Matters

Having a thoughtful and consistent presence on social media:

  • Builds trust and visibility with your audience
  • Allows you to educate and inspire potential clients or referral partners
  • Drives traffic to your services, courses, or offers
  • Positions you as an expert in your OT niche (e.g., pediatrics, mental health, aging in place, etc.)

Social media is great for "being seen" — but when it really impacts your business is when you can create a meaningful connection.

How to Choose the Right Social Channels

Don’t fall into the trap of trying to be everywhere all at once 😰. Instead, choose 1–2 core platforms based on. I’m trying to reach OTP’s (like you!) so I’m super active on LinkedIn. I’m also trying to reach family caregivers and older adults so I also focus on Facebook. We have presence on other platforms but that’s where I focus my efforts because it’s right for my business. So to choose your right channels consider:

1. Where your audience is hanging out

  • Parents of young kids? Facebook or Instagram.
  • Professionals or referral sources? LinkedIn.
  • Younger demographics? TikTok or Instagram Reels.
  • Writers and thought leaders? Substack, Medium, or Bluesky.
  • Video-focused storytelling? YouTube.

2. What kind of content you enjoy creating

  • Love talking? Try TikTok or YouTube.
  • Prefer writing? Medium or Substack.
  • Into short-form visuals? Instagram all the way.

The sweet spot is the intersection between your ideal audience and your strengths.

Engagement Over Everywhere: Focused Growth Strategy

Once you’ve chosen 1–2 platforms, go all in on those. Why?

  • You'll build deeper relationships by showing up consistently.
  • Algorithms reward engagement — replies, DMs, saves, comments.
  • It's more sustainable than stretching yourself thin.

🔁 Think quality over quantity. One thoughtful, on-brand post that gets engagement is worth more than five generic ones that disappear into the void.

Platform-by-Platform Optimization Tips

Let’s break down how to make the most of each social media platform👇

LinkedIn (B2B + Thought Leadership)

  • Profile: Optimize your headline and banner — make it clear who you help and how!
  • Content: Post 2–3x per week: insights, client wins, reflections, repurpose blog content.
  • Engagement: Comment on others' posts, especially in your niche.
  • Pro Tip: Use carousel posts and polls to boost visibility.

Facebook (Community + Local Engagement)

  • Page vs Group: Maintain a business page, and consider engaging in niche groups to foster community.
  • Content: Share behind-the-scenes, client testimonials (HIPAA-friendly), blog posts, short videos.
  • Engagement: Go Live, respond to every comment, ask questions in posts.
  • Pro Tip: Facebook Reels are hot right now — jump in!

Instagram (Visual Storytelling)

  • Bio: Short, clear CTA + use a link in bio tool like Linktree, Beacons, etc.
  • Content Mix: Reels (reach), Stories (connection), Carousels (education), Lives (engagement).
  • Hashtags: Use 10–15 targeted hashtags — a mix of broad and niche.
  • Pro Tip: Save time by batch-creating and scheduling content with tools like Later or Planoly.

TikTok (Authentic, Fast-Growth Potential)

  • Profile: Add keywords + link to your website or booking page.
  • Content: Keep it raw and real — short tips, myth-busting, storytelling.
  • Trends: Hop on trending sounds + make them relevant to OT or your niche.
  • Pro Tip: Consistency is 🔑 — even 1 video/day builds momentum fast. But keep the current legislation in mind - US access is available at this moment but more legislation would need to be maintain US’ longterm access to it.

Bluesky (Early Adopter Thought Leadership)

  • Voice: More casual, decentralized — great for thought-provoking content and networking.
  • Content: Share ideas, blog snippets, engage in dialogue.
  • Pro Tip: It’s still niche, but good for building early authority in emerging platforms.

YouTube (Long-Form Video Authority)

  • Channel Art: Make your value proposition clear.
  • Content: Educational content, how-tos, behind-the-scenes, patient success stories (HIPAA-friendly!).
  • SEO: Use strong titles, tags, and thumbnails. Add chapters to longer videos.
  • Pro Tip: Repurpose podcast episodes or Lives into YouTube content.

Medium (Thought Leadership via Articles)

  • Topics: Industry trends, personal reflections, how-to guides.
  • Style: Authentic, readable, and keyword-optimized.
  • Pro Tip: Join Medium publications to expand your reach.

Substack (Email + Blog Hybrid)

  • Content: Weekly or bi-weekly newsletters with stories, insights, or tips.
  • Monetization: You can add paid tiers once you’ve built an audience.
  • Pro Tip: Use it as your main blog and share posts on your other platforms.

Bonus Tips to Supercharge Your Strategy

1. Repurpose, Repurpose, Repurpose!

One idea can become:

  • A blog post
  • 3 IG reels
  • 1 TikTok
  • A carousel
  • A LinkedIn article
  • A newsletter issue

2. Use a scheduling tool

Try Buffer, Later, Metricool, or Hootsuite to plan ahead so you can stay consistent. It can be time consuming to create content so block off some time once a week or a month to create and then schedule the posts out over the time period!

3. Track what works

Every month, check:

  • Which posts performed best?
  • What got saves, shares, or DMs?
  • Double down on those topics and formats!

Final Thoughts

Social media success isn’t about going viral (although that’s an added bonus!) — it’s about showing up consistently and creating value for your ideal audience. 🌱 Start with 1–2 platforms, get to know your people, and serve them well — growth will follow.

You’ve got this! 💪
