Here's a step-by-step guide, to help you become a Medicare provider.

Step 2: Set Up an Account with PECOS

Step 3: Complete the Medicare Enrollment Application

  • Log into PECOS and complete the appropriate application (CMS Form 855):
  • Upload or provide all required documentation. PECOS will walk you through the steps. Make sure you have things such as:

Step 4: Submit the Application

  • Once the application is complete, submit it via PECOS online.
  • If applying manually (paper application), send the CMS Form 855 and all supporting documents to the Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) for your state.

Step 5: Respond to Any Requests for Information

  • After submission, your MAC may request additional information or corrections. Respond promptly to avoid delays. It’s already kind of a slow process, so be sure you’re not the hold up! 🫣

Step 6: Await Application Approval

  • The MAC will review your application and notify you of the decision.

Step 7: Receive Your Medicare Provider Number 🎉

  • Once approved, you’ll receive a Medicare Provider Transaction Access Number (PTAN), which officially makes you a Medicare provider.

Step 8: Start Billing Medicare

  • Now you’ll have your NPI and PTAN which allows you to begin submitting claims to Medicare.

Wrap up

Becoming a Medicare provider takes time, but it's totally doable when you break it down step by step. From getting your NPI to submitting your PECOS application, each move brings you closer to serving a broader population—especially older adults who truly need your care. Stay organized, respond promptly, and you’ll be billing Medicare in no time!
