How to Overcome Financial Barriers When Starting a Business

By Brandy Archie, OTD, OTR/L, CLIPP | AskSAMIE · 6 min read

Starting a business is exciting—but let’s be real, financial roadblocks can make it feel overwhelming. Between health insurance, startup costs, and wondering how you'll even get the thing off the ground without a trust fund, it's easy to get stuck before you start. But good news: You don’t need a pile of cash to build your dream. I started with a $1200 check from a car insurance payout to fix a dent in my car that I got when I was parked outside of a patient’s house while working in home health. (And I drove around with that dent a looooong time!) So I know you can do this.

Let’s break it all down into manageable steps 🌟

1. Make Peace with the Money Stuff

Health Insurance Without an Employer

One of the biggest fears around leaving a traditional job is losing employer-sponsored health insurance. Totally valid concern! But you're not out of options—there are affordable ways to get coverage on your own.

  • Healthcare.gov (or your state exchange): This is your go-to for marketplace plans. Based on your income, you may qualify for generous subsidies—especially in your first year or two of business when income is lower.
  • Medicaid: In many states, individuals under a certain income level qualify for Medicaid. If you’re healthy you can at least get some basic coverage.
  • High-Deductible Health Plans (HDHP) + HSA: If you're healthy and want to keep monthly premiums low, this combo is smart and gives you tax advantages through a Health Savings Account.
  • Short-term Insurance Plans: These can be a stopgap solution if you have a few months between stronger insurance. These are often catastrophe plans that make sure you’re not stuck with a high ER bill for an accident, but beware of coverage limits and exclusions.
  • Freelancers Union: This is an awesome resource I didn’t found out about until recently. The Freelancers Union is a nonprofit that advocates for independent workers and connects you with health insurance options in your state. They also offer free resources, legal support, contract templates, and a thriving freelancer community. In select areas like New York, they partner with health plans directly. Even outside those areas, they guide you to good options and teach you what to look for. Membership is free!

💡 Pro Tip: In your first year of business, your income might be low enough to qualify for major subsidies. Use that to your advantage while you build your biz.

2. Startup Funding Options

Accessing Funds Without Going Broke

You don’t need to go into debt to get your business off the ground. Plenty of entrepreneurs bootstrap it until the money starts coming in. Here’s how to find the cash—creatively:

  • Personal Savings (but cap your risk!): Budget how much you’re willing to invest from savings and stick to it.
  • Reinvest Side Gig Revenue: Offer your services on the side and put every dollar earned back into building your biz.
  • Small Business Grant Sites: Sign up for their newsletters so you can stay up to date on all the grants that you might qualify for. For a deep dive on different types of grants check out Best Practices for Applying for Small Business Grants.
  • Microloans & 0% Interest Options: if you decide to take out a loan there are some options that could make sense.
  • Friends & Family Funding: Sometimes your support network is also able and willing to invest in you by investing in your business. If you go this route, make it professional. Use contracts and repayment terms to keep relationships healthy.

3. You Are the Product: Reduce Startup Costs

5. Start as a Side Gig While Working Full-Time

Ease In Without Losing Your Paycheck

You don’t need to go all in on Day 1. In fact, most successful entrepreneurs started their business as a side hustle while working full-time. Here's how to do it smart:

  • Block out a few hours per week to work on your biz.
  • Offer 1:1 services on evenings or weekends.
  • Use PTO to experiment with short-term offers or events.
  • Build up testimonials and case studies while keeping financial stability.

Want to Take a Bigger Step? Think About Changing Jobs.

If your current role is inflexible, it might be time for a bridge job:

  • Consider working 2 PRN jobs that can give you flexibility and time to build your business.
  • Consider roles that let you set your schedule like home health.
  • Consider roles where the schedule starts later or earlier so you have a block of time in your day to work on your business.

💡 This isn’t quitting—it’s repositioning. Your bridge job is funding your dream.

Final Thoughts: You’re More Ready Than You Think

Don’t let money fears stop you from building the business you know you're meant for. With the right mindset and strategy, you can launch your service-based biz without going into debt or losing your safety net.

  • Start small.
  • Use free tools.
  • Tap into existing resources.
  • Keep your day job (for now).
  • Let you be the product.

You're not behind. You’re just getting started—and that’s exactly where you’re supposed to be. 🌱
